Novak Djokovic has won the longest Grand Slam final in history, overcoming Rafael Nadal in an epic five-set encounter at the Australian Open.

The match lasted five hours and 53 minutes, and was the first time a Grand Slam final had gone to a fifth set since the 2008 Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Nadal.

Djokovic won the first set 7-5, but Nadal took the second set 6-4 to level the match. Djokovic then won the third set 6-2, and the fourth set went to a tiebreak, which Nadal won 7-5.

The fifth set was a tense affair, with both players holding serve until the 12th game, when Djokovic broke Nadal to take the match 7-5.

The win is Djokovic's sixth Grand Slam title, and his third Australian Open title.
